“Pop Culture vs. Mainstream America: When whose child you are determines what you are…”

By Hannah Carter, Director of Education for Georgia Right to Life
August 24, 2009

In America, we have a fascination with celebrities’ lives: where they live, what they wear, who they date, and we especially love to read about when they get married or have children. Last week Céline Dion was in the news announcing her most recent pregnancy.

On August 19th, MSNBC reported that Céline Dion was “excited to be expecting her second child.”[i] However, the headline read something different, “Céline Dion’s embryo was frozen for 8 years”.

In 2000 during the pregnancy of her first child, Céline Dion promised her mom that she would go back and get her other frozen embryo from the fertility clinic.
She noted, “I surely couldn’t live knowing that child is there.”[ii]
What was interesting was that the media was fascinated with the fact that Céline Dion became pregnant by using one of her frozen embryos, not the fact that the embryo was a person and therefore deserved life.
The day before the Associated Press announced that the FDA Hollywood sign 900was delaying the 1st human trial using human embryonic stem cells.[iii]

In January 2009, the FDA approved the Geron Corporation to begin using human embryonic stem cells to treat human patients suffering from spinal cord injury.

Translation: the same life form (human embryos) that the FDA was okay with killing and using for research by the Geron Corporation in one story is viewed as a person in another because he or she is wanted.

However, the inconsistencies do not stop there.

kourtney kardashian

On August 19th, Kourtney Kardashian star of the television show,“Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami” announced to People magazine that she had decided to keep her baby and not have an abortion.[iv]

She noted that after looking online and seeing how abortion had affected so many women that she could not go through with an abortion.

“I was just sitting there crying, thinking, ‘I can’t do that,’ “she says.”And I felt in my body, this is meant to be. God does things for a reason, and I just felt like it was the right thing that was happening in my life.”

What is interesting is the wording of the opening sentence of the article read, “…Would she have the baby or terminate the pregnancy?”

The opening line of the article did not read would she have her baby or terminate her baby.

A day before, Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood blasted the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in an article in The Huffington Post for “demanding universal health care without abortion.” Ms. Richards goes on to report that by leaving abortion out of national health care coverage that the USCCB is making every woman in America “a second class citizen.”[v]

How is it that in one report because Kourtney Kardashian wanted her baby that she was having a child, buabortion_is_not_health_care_poster-p228089796753253810td87_210-789857t in another article Cecile Richards gets infuriated because the thoughts of the USCCB might influence the debate on whether the US Government (a.k.a. US taxpayers) should pay for abortions?

The only answer I can come up with is that in America whose child you are determines what you are.

If you are wanted, you are a baby. If you are unwanted, you are a product of conception.

So for instance, the children born to Céline Dion, Kourtney Kardashian, and Angelina Jolie are persons because they were wanted. But to the 19 year old female college student it is a choice, a burden, and definitely not a human life.

However the question remains is an embryo a person or a product of research? Is an unborn child a life deserving of protection or a problem that must be quietly destroyed?

The comparisons do not sound that sweet when you put them side by side. But inconsistencies exist like this every day. The question is when we as individuals will start calling Planned Parenthood and the main stream media out?

When will we say no, Ms. Richards, denying a woman an abortion is not making her a second class citizen it is giving her the opportunity to be spared from the one of the most horrific medical practices invented since the creation of mankind.

It is giving her child a chance at life.

The same needs to be said to the FDA for embryonic stem cell research. You do not kill one life to potentially save another.

We need to remind people that scientifically the term embryo does not determine what something is but rather what stage of development it is at just like the terms infant, teenager, and adult. A human embryo can only be one thing a human being.

It is scientific fact not political opinion that life begins at fertilization. Once the sperm and the oocyte (egg) join together they form a separate distinct human being, also known at this stage as a zygote or embryo.

The zygote has everything it needs to function as a separate and distinct human being. It only needs time, food, and a place to grow.

No one ever looks at a pregnant woman and says, “I wonder what she is having a boy or a frog?”pregnant-belly

Just as now, people are not looking at Céline Dion and Kourtney Kardashian wondering if the children they are carrying are persons or not.

It is time to confront the truth and call out the inconsistencies.

We have to make the humanity of the child relevant again whether he or she is in the embryonic stage or the fetal stage.

It is time that we remind people that abortion and embryonic stem cell research are not political wedge issues, but rather the intentional killing of human life.

It is time to realize that what Joseph Stalin once stated is so true, “One death is a tragedy and a million deaths is a statistic.”

Let’s make the destruction of every innocent human life be seen for what it is, a tragedy.

Let’s start now and not finish until every life is valued regardless of its origin, dependency, or disability.

If you ask Begala he would give you two thumbs up. I would say he is a liberal idiot bound by his adoration of the Obama administration. It is America so let’s just agree to disagree.

Dear Mr. President

barack-obama

Dear Mr. President,

I write this letter, in hopes that your eyes will be opened, to what you have done. Your administration has said to its people through bailouts, stimulus packages, and mandated pay, “We the Government know how, where, and when you money should be spent. We will take from you and give to others all in the name of fairness.” There are those in the media who would say, “Those who disagree with Obama (you) are just ignorant-racist-rednecks.” Those people in the media have no idea of whom they speak. They have clearly shown ignorance as to why we fight, and what we fight to protect. They do not understand our founding and they have no understanding of our great history.

Woodrow Wilson once said “Liberty has never come from the government. Liberty has always come from the subjects of it. The history of liberty is a history of resistance.”

So, that is exactly why we have held the tea parties. It is to fight against your government, a government who openly chooses before the world to ignore the pleas of its people. You have chosen to show no form of self-restraint or self-control. So We the People – We the People will resist your government and the policies you would enact that would limit our Constitutional liberties.

John f. Kennedy he once said, “On the hope of our free nation rests the hopes of all free nations.”

I would take that quote and say, The freedom and liberty of all nations rest on the survival of America’s freedom and liberty. If the American citizens so choose to let freedom die here, they have unknowingly chosen the same fate for every other free nation. If freedom cannot make it here in America, where can freedom survive?

Men and Women throughout America’s existence have boasted of American greatness. They have shown their love of our freedoms, ideas, and beliefs.

Ronald Reagan once said “The living Americans today have fought harder, paid a higher price for freedom, and done more to advance the dignity of man than any people who ever lived on this earth.”

Today we do not often find this American pride in our civil servants. Mr. President, I do not find this pride in you. Instead they have shown, you have shown, contempt for the American individual and the freedoms we hold; sadly you look more kindly upon socialism, communism, and marxism.

God for some reason has chosen, for all our imperfections, to smile upon our nation and has blessed us with incomparable freedoms. The American people have now come to a day of choosing. The choice is simple which would you rather have liberty or tyranny? I beg and plead on behalf of my generation, choose to fight for freedom, fight for the American individual. If not for your own sake, fight for the sake of future generations, fight for all of democracy; democracy that is now striving or is just now braking free.

Every now and then, a video comes along, that just speaks truth.

In the latest turn of events in this circus we call “the media” the Washington Post editor (Cathy Areu) proceeded to say, “She probably would want to say, ‘Not only do I mean a wise Latina, I meant any Latina could make a better decision than a white man could.'” When talking about the remarks made by Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.
